Independent Projects

Project Timelines for Juniors and Seniors

Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to design independent projects instead of participating in the traditional May Programs. Working in consultation with a faculty member who serves as her advisor, each girl develops a project that is unique to her. Many students choose to explore areas of college study or a potential career path. Past projects have included working as a veterinary aide, being part of a congressional campaign committee, assisting teachers at an elementary school, and interning in surgical pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Part One (to be completed by October 20)

  • Research possible projects and job sites
  • Submit a completed sign-up sheet with Independent Project as your first choice
  • Make an initial proposal to Ms. Blaum

Part Two (to be completed by November 7)

  • Begin keeping an independent project journal that includes: Information about the proposal and the overall process
  • Record of all contact with onsite supervisor and any concerns or questions you have about your project

Part Three (to be completed by January 6)

  • Make contact with the organization for which you will work
  • Establish a supervisor at the organization (cannot be a relative)
  • Prepare a detailed proposal that includes:
    • A description of the project
    • Your goals for this project (wWhat do you hope to learn, to create, to do?)
    • The location of your project
    • Your on-site supervisor’s name and contact information
  • Continue making entries in your journal

Part Four (to be completed by February 6)

  • Establish your daily schedule including hours and what type of work you will be doing each day (minimum of 40 hours per week is required)
  • Decide how you will create your portfolio
  • Begin to think about your oral presentation to the school after May Program
  • Have initial meeting with your on-campus supervisor (to be assigned)
  • Continue making entries in your journal

Part Five (to be completed by March 31)

  • Determine how you will get to and from your project each day
  • Determine how you will get from Oldfields to your project and back to Oldfields
  • Determine any costs associated with your independent project
  • Continue making entries in your journal
  • Begin your portfolio

Part Six (to be completed by April 28)

  • Meet with your on-campus supervisor during scheduled May Program meetings
  • Contact your on-site supervisor and develop a daily schedule for your project
  • Continue making entries in your journal
  • Continue working on your portfolio
  • Determine your technology needs for your oral presentation

Part Seven (to be completed during May Program)

  • Make daily entries in your journal and portfolio
  • Contact your on-campus supervisor once a day (phone or email or text)
  • Prepare your oral presentation (approximately 5-8 minutes long)

*Note: All students doing independent projects must return to campus by 7:30 pm on Monday, June 3*, 2019
